Certified Nutritional Counselor

Most people get stuck somewhere between busy schedules, confusing nutrition advice, and years of habits.

It can feel frustrating when you know what you should be doing, but aren’t sure how to make it work in real life. That’s where I come in.

At The Kitchen Mentor, our experiences and mentoring services are built around you—your routine, your goals, and your starting point. It’s about building something sustainable.

Believing that healthy living starts in your kitchen because lasting change doesn’t come from willpower alone. It comes from knowing what to eat, how to prepare it, and why it matters.

As a nutrition counselor with 15 years of working with individuals and groups, I’ve seen the same challenge over and over: people don’t need more information—they need practical skills and guidance they can actually use.

That’s what I do.

I step into the kitchen with you—literally or virtually—and help you build confidence, simplify healthy eating, and create meals that support the life you want to live. No overwhelm. No extremes. Just real food, real skills, and a clear path forward.

When you know your way around the kitchen, everything else gets easier.

What You Are You Eating?

KNOW YOUR INGREDIENTS

Nutrition concerns are a relatively recent focus in modern society. While people have always cared about having enough to eat, much of today's attention is centered on the quality of our food rather than simply the quantity.

Over the past 50 to 70 years, processed and fast foods have become increasingly popular because they are inexpensive, widely available, heavily marketed, and designed for convenience.

Many packaged foods contain long lists of ingredients that would not normally be found in a home kitchen. Artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, stabilizers, sweeteners, and other additives are often included to improve shelf life, texture, appearance, or taste. While these products may be convenient, they often contain far less whole, recognizable food than many people realize.

A breakfast pastry, frozen dinner, flavored chips, or sugary cereal may be made up of dozens of manufactured ingredients rather than simple foods like oats, vegetables, fruit, or whole grains.

Many processed foods are also carefully formulated to encourage people to keep eating. Manufacturers often combine sugar, salt, and fat in ways that make foods highly appealing.

Think about how easy it is to finish an entire bag of chips, a package of cookies, or a large order of fries without ever feeling truly satisfied. In contrast, whole foods such as apples, oranges, carrots, eggs, beans, or baked potatoes naturally contain fiber, protein, healthy fats, and nutrients that help your body recognize when it has had enough.

As you gradually reduce heavily processed foods and begin eating more fresh, whole foods, many people discover that their cravings begin to change. Foods that once seemed plain suddenly become flavorful again.

A crisp apple tastes sweeter, fresh berries become a satisfying dessert, and vegetables prepared with simple seasonings become enjoyable rather than something to avoid. Your body's natural hunger and fullness signals often become easier to recognize when they are no longer competing with highly processed ingredients designed to encourage overeating.

With The Kitchen Mentor, our focus is always on eating real food whenever possible while minimizing the use of pre-packaged convenience products. Real food does not have to be complicated or time-consuming. In many cases, it is actually the simplest option.

Washing an apple and taking a big, juicy bite takes less time than opening a package of snack cakes. A handful of grapes, a banana, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, sliced vegetables with hummus, or a handful of nuts can be just as convenient as many processed snacks while providing far more nutritional value.

Simple meals can be prepared quickly using everyday ingredients. A grilled chicken breast with steamed vegetables, scrambled eggs with spinach, oatmeal topped with fresh fruit, or a salad filled with colorful vegetables are all examples of meals that require little preparation while providing excellent nutrition.

Cooking at home also allows you to control the ingredients, portion sizes, and seasonings, making it easier to build healthier eating habits over time.

Our website contains a collection of family friendly recipes selected specifically for their simplicity and practicality. The ingredients are easy to find in most grocery stores, and many are common pantry staples that you may already have on hand.

As we begin developing a new way of thinking about the foods we purchase, instead of making decisions based solely on the front of the package, it's important to examine the Nutrition Facts panel and ingredient list on the back.

Marketing terms such as "natural," "made with whole grains," "low fat," or "heart healthy" do not always tell the complete story. Reading the ingredient list helps you understand exactly what you are putting into your body.

As you become familiar with food labels, you will start recognizing ingredients that are commonly added to processed foods. You may be surprised to discover how much added sugar is hidden in breakfast cereals, flavored yogurt, salad dressings, pasta sauces, beverages, and even foods that are marketed as healthy.

Of course, healthy eating does not mean giving up the family recipes and favorite meals that have been enjoyed for generations. Those dishes often carry memories and traditions that are worth preserving. Instead of eliminating them, you can learn how to make thoughtful substitutions that improve their nutritional value while maintaining the flavors everyone loves.

Rather than focusing on restriction, our goal is to discover practical ways to prepare foods that nourish your body while still fitting comfortably into your everyday life.
