Elderberry – “Nature’s Medicine Chest”

Known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-viral properties, the elderberry has become a household staple used for boosting the immune system and helping to fight off colds and flu. Beneficial properties in the elderberry, especially when utilized at the onset of symptoms, can slow down the replication of viruses and strengthen cell walls to avoid further penetration. Research studies show significant health improvements with the use of elderberry.
There are both red and black elderberries. Red are toxic, causing uncomfortable digestive issues and should be avoided. But fully ripe black elderberries (Sambucus nigra), along with their leaves and flowers, are edible. Berries should never be eaten raw, but cooked or dehydrated for human consumption. Stems and roots are toxic. When wild harvesting be certain that you have confidently identified the correct species. Originally a European native plant, you will find it growing along riverbanks, fields, roadsides, farmyards and home gardens in areas throughout the world.
