Do You Believe It?

What is it we all long for – energy, clear focus, a healthy body! It doesn’t matter how old you are, these things give a feeling of vibrancy to our lives.
For the past thirteen years I’ve put a lot of energy, time and resources into growing healthier. But at one time, I believed a lie – “It is normal to gain weight, have achy joints and less energy as we age.”
Do you believe this, like I once did? Determined, I knew I had to do something about the way I felt – overweight, lethargic, brain fog and very little motivation to move (that’s the nice word for exercise).
It started with a glass of carrot juice one Sunday afternoon, back in 2011. We made a few other little changes like salads instead of sandwiches for lunch and fruit smoothies instead of ice cream at night. And for dinner, just the healthiest version of the foods we liked to eat.
To my surprise the pounds started coming off, the brain fog subsided, and I was on a new mission to discover more! It wasn’t easy but I was not going back! I’d gotten a feel for feeling good! I had to know more!
After several certified trainings and lots of fun experiences with others who are wanting to improve their health, I realized this is a life-long journey. And the Lord showed me that what I was learning was meant to be shared. What has become my mission scripture moves me to keep going.
“Do not be conformed to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing
of your mind so that you may know the good and perfect will of God.”
Changing the patterns of my food and activity choices and even my own limiting thinking, helped me discover and appreciate new purposes for my life. The births of my grandchildren and the birthing of The Kitchen Mentor have significantly redirected my energies.
With a few ups and downs over the years and a wide search for an understanding medical provider, things had leveled out and I have been maintaining at a good place. Even though some of my numbers from bloodwork were within normal range, there were a few that were very close to borderline HIGH or LOW. I also thought I had pretty much arrived at my peak and was feeling pretty good for 69 years old.
Then, I listened to a talk last December 2023 by Dr. Brooke Goldner. Not sure how I found her, but I heard her fascinating story of recovery from Lupus. I LOVE success stories of people who have overcome health issues with diet and lifestyle choices. What fascinates me even more is their mental attitude, their approach to making changes and their shear determination. It is inspiring!
Dr. Goldner’s program had many elements familiar to my trainings and experiences but went a little further. Actually, her programs are quite simple, not necessarily easy though. Do you know how hard it is to drink all that water! Thankfully, I was not starting at the point where I was, back in 2011. Even so, the results were obvious.
Intrigued by her program and the different levels of participation, I jumped in and started because I thought my hair, nails and skin could use a little extra nutrition. My hair, since 2021 began thinning. My nails have always been wavy and ridged and my skin needed a little umpf! So, I started in with 3 simple changes…
Hyper-nourishing green smoothies, hydration and omega 3 flax and chia seeds. Smoothies were already a part of my routine, I only needed to rev them up a bit.
Almost immediately my energy, both physical and mental, really improved! It took some time to adjust to these simple new changes, but WOW!
Here’s a few things I noticed...
Before – by 7pm I was pretty much done for the day as far as any thinking projects.
Now – I can keep going, if I want to, working, writing, cleaning, thinking, gardening, with energy – not just going through the motions
Before – rarely drank enough water, even though I thought I did
Now – understand the extreme need for good hydration and have a daily goal of 80oz
Before – had given some thought to how omega 3 affected my health, especially brain function considering the family history of dementia
After – I have FELT the difference omega 3 has made to my memory and mental health and continue to build up my intake
